Ivan Čuk

In 2009 a group of gymnastics researchers, professors, coaches decided it is time to start a scientific journal completely dedicated to gymnastics. History of gymnastics and its development went through various phases. In physical culture gymnastics means the core activity, which can be today found in physical education in all levels of education, it is sport, it is activity for long life and health. As such phenomena it is worth to research it regarding its influence on human life and human achievements. Three main scientific frames: natural, social and human aspects are included. With the journal which covers all aspects of gymnastics, we made a meeting point between science and praxis. Also, FIG recognized the importance of it and supports it. Great number of authors from countries from all continents made journal widespread and cited, so in year 2022 we are for the first time included into Journal Citation Report by Web of Science

We know that warm-ups are a vital part of training and that they are used to activate the cardiovascular system, but not only that!

There are choreographic warm-ups, which are highly specific and require a choreographer or equivalent. But to be more complete in our training sessions as well as motor coordination and memory warm-ups. Warm-ups based on general physical preparation. Warm-ups oriented towards general aerobic capacity and cardio-respiratory solicitation or even injury prevention. I propose to teach you all these action types in a single session, to increase the range of possibilities for your gymnasts and, above all, for yourself.

Objective: The purpose of this study is a comparison of skeletal muscle characteristics in Slovenian gymnasts assessed by TMG and values of contraction properties of muscles, lateral symmetries, and the effect of aging on selected contraction properties of skeletal muscles in men's artistic gymnastics (MAG); women's artistic gymnastics (WAG) and rhythmic gymnastics (RG). This study is the first larger study to use the TMG method and in which top athletes from artistic and rhythmic gymnastics participated.

Materials and Methods: A survey of 81 athletes from different disciplines was conducted as follows: MAG (n = 26), WAG (n = 28), and RG (n = 27). The athletes’ average age was 15.41 ± 5.03 years. In this study, the contraction times of ten skeletal muscles for Slovenian gymnasts on the right and left sides of the body were compared: M. Biceps brachii, M. Triceps brachii, M. Biceps femoris, M. Erector spinae, M. Gastrocnemius lateralis, M. Gastrocnemius medialis, M. Rectus femoris, M. Tibialis anteriror, M Vastus lateralis, M. Vastus medialis.

Results: In MAG, a statistically significant correlation between age and contraction time was found for m. VL and m. VM. In WAG, was found for m. GM. In RG was found for m. TA and m VL for all at p < 0.01. Conclusions: A comparison between the left and the right side body shows a slight asymmetry. With TMG, we can assess the discipline’s demands and help improve gymnasts’ performances along with the safety of training. Tensiomyography has a high predictive ability to discriminate between the left and right sides of the body functionally.

Aim: trainer education and basic knowledge of modern diagnostic technologies

312212 - Assessment of muscle activity in different exercises used to achieve the iron cross. Comparison between achievers and non-achievers

Michel Marina

We verified training the iron cross (IC) with assistive devices (herdos; H0) and added external load (HL) to equate the moments of force developed in the rings (R0) could be considered as an intermediate step between the no-overloaded herdos situation (H0) and the IC performed in R0. The sEMG activity levels measured in the present study were normalized with respect to a standing IC before comparing gymnasts who can perform the IC in R0 (achievers) and gymnast who do not (non-achievers) in the two herdos conditions (H0 and HL). Seven muscles were chosen for sEMG analysis: Pectoralis Major (PM), Latissimus Dorsi, Teres Major (TM), Lower Trapezius, Serratus Anterior, Biceps Brachii (BB), and Triceps Brachii (TB). Additionally, three indices were calculated to measure levels of coactivation: Elbowidx, Scapulaidx and Shoulderidx. As main results we can highlight that: 1) The bigger differences in sEMG activity among situations were found for the PM and BB. 2) Non-achievers activated their musculature to a greater extent than the achievers independently of the herdos situation. 3) Achievers’ Elbowidx was the only index that was significantly higher in the R0 in comparison to HL and H0. As “take home messages”: 1) sEMG activity of PM and BB was particularly sensitive between situations, independently of the level of achievement. 2) We recommend training the IC by adding external load in herdos situation to increase muscle activity to levels closer to the rings’ situation but avoiding potential factors of injuries.

The aim: Having some experience related to the physical conditionning oriented to rings routine

• Make productive and predictive choices

• Individualize the training

The FIG oriented to specialist vs All arounders

Exp: Olympic pathway and selection system

• Coaches concern turns now to more efficiency

Nowadays, if a sportsman wants to perform, we have to offer him spatial, visual, respiratory and motion orientations, this is what we call ...MOTIONS PREFERENCIES

This new concept of talent ID is the way for tomorrow to be able to identify the best way to perform.

Monèm Jemni

The objective of this talk is to provide insight on the latest scientific concepts underpinning Strength, Power and Plyometric Training in Gymnastics. The concepts could be applied by the coaches and the technicians.

There is no doubt that males and females’ artistic gymnastics is valuing the above physical fitness qualities throughout the years (Jemni 2018). This is exemplified by the number and the values of the difficulties that are increasing simultaneously.

A range of physiological and biomechanical concepts would be uncovered to demonstrate how gymnastics training is becoming more and more a micro-training type in order to achieve the highest performance outcomes.

The talk would start by providing a holistic information about gymnasts’ fitness make-off and the way to improve them via scientific principles of training and coaching. The physical abilities required to perform this sport at a high-level fitness and their interactions would be discussed. The concepts of applied strength and power would then be reviewed based on the most specific physical and physiological assessments of these abilities and specifically for gymnasts. The last part of the talk would be dedicated to the very important basic gymnastics skill, the jump. This later will be decorticated into the smallest details showing the underpinning neuro-physiology and biomechanics principles behind them, followed by ways to improve them (Jemni 2018).

Jonas Rohleder

The visualisation of movement sequences, for instance by means of body language, is an essential tool used by coaches and Physical Education teachers to promote a learner’s idea of movement and, thus, movement learning. Surprisingly though, we have found the teaching of practical skills for visualisation to be a rarely considered (if not underrepresented?) scope in the educational process, whereas issues including visual feedback and observational learning were, at least theoretically, processed. Based on theoretical reflections and previous pilot studies, this lecture invites to discuss the question whether, in this matter, the word “underrepresented” is appropriate at all or whether the practical teaching of visualisation skills may yet be a promising approach for enhanced research-led interdisciplinary educational concepts in gymnastics coaching and teaching.

The new FIG Technical Regulations remove the last of the open-access Team World Championships that previously occurred in the middle of each Olympic cycle. In my opinion, this decision by FIG authorities betrays the member federations who, despite my warnings in April 2022, have only now realized what it means that only 24 teams selected at Continental Championships according with severe FIG mandated quotas may participate. This example leads to a wider investigation and discussion of how the relationship between the FIG and its member federations has changed over the decades and how the federations have allowed their authority over the gymnastics sports to be eroded, and handed ever more control to the FIG.

“Not too much, not too less , just the right point”

A trainer needs to plan his training sessions to be able to control the workload. Between work and rest, you need to be able to fine-tune the amount of daily stress. Intensity, volume, specificity, and complexity are all data that a good coach must manage like a real sound mixer in order to prepare his gymnasts as accurately as possible towards a competitive goal. Overloading and under-training can not only lead to under-performance, but also to serious damage. The aim of this presentation is to set the limits, but above all to propose control tools that are essential for the safety of our gymnasts.

Lina Fey

The 20 m Shuttle Run Test is a popular and efficient endurance field test for children and adolescents to estimate the maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). The test is already being used successfully in various game sports with young athletes. In artistic gymnastics, the importance of endurance has increased in recent years, due mainly to longer exercises, increasing difficulty requirements and thus higher training volumes with large numbers of repetitions and the regeneration ability this requires. There is, to date, no meaningful endurance test for junior gymnastics in Germany.

Based on the 20 m Shuttle Run Test the newly developed 12 m Shuttle Run Test is adapted to artistic gymnastics' conditions and requirement profile. The running distance was shortened to 12 m to meet specific gymnasium conditions, with a floor area of 12m x 12m. Additionally, the test duration was reduced by a faster increase in speed and a shorter interval duration, resulting in a ramp test protocol.

To establish the 12 m Shuttle Run Test as a reliable diagnostic tool, the main quality criteria of validity and reliability must be verified. The article presents the results of the studies on the validity and reliability of the test in children and adults. The goal is to scientifically prove the aerobic endurance test for artistic gymnasts and to evaluate its quality, reliability of validity and economics

All our life is only movement.

If physiology corresponds to the physical dimension of the performance in gymnastics, psychology guides us for the psychological dimension, without a doubt biomechanics opens the doors of technique.

"Biomechanics is the study of mechanics applied to the human body. It is a science whose purpose is the study of the forces and effects produced by their applications.”

By the perfect understanding of biomechanics we can analyze and teach movements but also identify errors.

We know that it is broken down into 3 forms of mechanical studies:

- Statics: Study of the conditions of equilibrium of a body under the effect of a force.

- Kinetics: Study of motion.

- Dynamics: Study of the relationships between forces and movements.

After long cooperation in exchange of teaching stuff between faculties in Czech, Slovenia and Croatia, we started joint project under Miriam Kalichova leading to prepare video materials of gymnastics for students with sport orientation. Reasons to do it were need to upgrade our study program, need to facilitate student work at home (also because of pandemics), and make safer environment for doing gymnastics. Research of gymnastics video contents on YouTube showed there are from 0 videos for some elements included in our curriculums up to almost 8 million for L-sit. Our website includes all elements which are in our curriculums at bachelor degree, every element is described with video and voice, presented are main biomechanics characteristic of element, exercises for physical preparation, pre-elements and spotting. There are also questions for students to prepare for examinations. More than 2000 videos are included. Oral voice presentations are in English, Czech, Slovene and Croatian language. Website will be open for all users.

Flexibility combined with strength and/or power is without a doubt a fundamental fitness quality that males and females’ gymnasts have to acquire from the very early ages of specialisation and to maintain throughout their career.

The objective of this presentation is to provide some of the cutting-edge science-based technologies to enhance the muscular viscoelasticity. Vibration treatment has been shown not only to improve muscle flexibility but also to improve strength and power. It is suggested that the combined treatments could indeed contribute to the prevention of muscular injuries in particular in sports where flexibility is not one of the main physical fitness and/or less considered as a priority.
